It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Travis Rackley Barfield, who passed away peacefully on December 20, 2024. Born on December 4, 1946, at Fort McClellan Army Base in Anniston, Alabama, Travis grew up in Warner Robins, Georgia. He lived a life of dedication, service, and faith, touching the lives of many throughout his journey.
Travis joined the United States Air Force in July 1965, where he served with distinction and later received a disability retirement in 1966. He attended some college in Tifton, Georgia, and eventually moved to Mobile, Alabama, where he worked in sales before answering the call to serve others in a more profound way.
From 1993 to 2015, Travis served as a missionary in Russia, spreading his faith and love for others across the world. His commitment to his mission and the people he encountered left a lasting legacy. In 1995, he married the love of his life, Susan Barfield, and together they built a family rooted in love, faith, and service.
After returning to Mobile, Alabama, Travis continued his ministry, serving as a pastor at a church in Citronelle, Alabama, where his guidance and compassion touched the hearts of many. In retirement, Travis and Susan moved to Athens, Alabama, where they spent their last years together.
Travis is survived by his beloved wife, Susan; daughter, Kimberly of Augusta, GA; son, JJ of Bovey, MN; and stepchildren, Sean of Athens, AL, Tracy of Nashville, TN, and Kenny of Madison, AL. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, as well as his sisters, Mary Jo Higgs of Fernandina Beach, FL, and Jennifer Frick of South Paris, ME. His love, faith, and guidance will be missed by all who knew him, but his legacy of service and devotion to God and family will continue to inspire and uplift.
A memorial service to honor his life will be held at Emmanuel Baptist Church of Athens on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at 11:00 AM, with a visitation starting at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church Playground/children’s Ministry.
Rest in peace, Travis. Your life was a testament to your unwavering faith, and you will never be forgotten.
