Roger Edmund Bunnell of Huntsville, born December 3, 1964, passed away May 26, 2025 after a lengthy illness.
Roger graduated from Huntsville High School in 1982 and from UAH with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Industrial). He continued his education at the University of Alabama and earned a Master of Science in Engineering (Environmental). He worked at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center for almost 35 years before retiring in 2020.
In his early NASA years, Roger was the Payload Crew Training Complex (PCTC) cost account manager for numerous Spacelab missions which flew on the Space Shuttle in the 1990s, including the Astro and Atlas pallet missions, and the Microgravity Laboratory Spacelab missions. He also worked on the development of the Payload Planning System software for the scheduling of the experiments to be flown on the International Space Station. As Environmental Engineer, Roger worked on water quality management and oversaw the Recycling Program, Green Purchasing Program, Chemical Inventory Program and assisted with the Nat’l Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) program. He organized NASA’s Earth Day activities for many years.
Roger was a gentle soul who was happiest spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed traveling, especially to beaches and national parks, with his cousin and friends.Roger played on adult league softball and volleyball teams and developed a unique and memorable volleyball kick dig save. He was a supportive uncle to his nephew and niece and regularly attended their many soccer games and activities. Roger had a quick wit and a whimsical sense of humor which was demonstrated by calling himself a “professional gambler” after retiring because he made regular trips to Tennessee with friends to purchase lottery tickets for fun. He was a dedicated caregiver to his parents in the later years of their lives and always a loyal brother/brother-in-law/uncle.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Terri and Chuck Bunnell. Survivors include his brother, Charles Bunnell (Jennifer) of Athens; nephew, Dean; niece, Mary Arlin. He leaves behind several cousins, aunts, uncles and treasured friends. Roger appreciated the recent visits from his former co-workers and dear friends.
There will be a celebration of life brunch honoring Roger at his brother’s family home in Athens, AL on Saturday, June 28 at 10:00am. All of Roger’s family, friends, and work colleagues are invited. If you need the address, email cbunnell0@gmail.com.

I am so sad to hear this. Roger was one of the kindest, gentlest people I have ever known. We used to play chess during lunch at HHS. I reconnected with him on FB several years ago. He will be missed.

Roger was a good friend in high school, a genuinely kind person. I frequently walk my dog through his old neighborhood and remember playing basketball in his driveway.
