August 13, 1944 - February 18, 2025

Richard Arnold Callahan (Retired CW3-Army), age 80, of Madison, Alabama passed away February 18, 2025. A memorial service will be held Friday, February 28 at Spry Funeral Home in Athens at 1:00 pm. Williams Funeral Home is assisting the family.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Marion Green Dumond; stepfather, Richard Dumond; father, Clifford Callahan; father-in-law, Karl Obermeier; mother-in-law, Elisabeth Obermeier; brothers, Robert Dumond, Gerald Dumond; sister, Geraldine (Ginger) Cropley; and son-in-law, Harrison Wayne Myers III.

Mr. Callahan is survived by his lovely wife of 60 years, Erika Obermeier Callahan; daughter, Marion Myers; son, Stephen Callahan; granddaughters, Christina Siniard (Ross), Katelyn Callahan (Joesph Britt), Sierra Holden (Benjamin), Sydney Callahan; and great-grandchildren, Ila Katherine, Ava, Wayne, Jaxon, Clay, and John Rivers.

He dedicated his life to serving God by being a true neighbor, always ready to help those in need.

For 22 years, he served in the Army, stationed in Germany for four tours, as well as at Fort Campbell, KY, Fort Benning, GA, and a tour in Vietnam. He was the epitome of patriotism, always putting his soldiers first.

Above all, he was a devoted family man. His family, from his beloved wife Erika of 60 years to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, meant the world to him.

May his memory be a blessing and may his legacy of love and compassion inspire us all. His light will continue to shine brightly in our hearts.

I had the pleasure of taking care of Rick while he was a patient at Huntsville Hospital. His family surrounded him with such love and warmth. I will remember him and his family for their kindness and compassion.
