Freda Jean Pearce Pankey, affectionately known as Ma, 77, went to live with Jesus on Monday, February 5, 2024, surrounded by her family singing her into Heaven. Born on February 28, 1946 in Albertville, AL to Fred and Laura Jean Pearce, she was the oldest of five children and worked hard on the family’s farm. She became the faithful and devoted wife of the late Lewis Ausbin Pankey in 1964 and remained so for the rest of her life. Together they raised four children who loved and respected their parents immensely. Music and singing filled their home, most notably during their Saturday morning “Family Music” sessions. Ma played bass in their family band. She also served her church family by singing alto in the choir, playing the piano, performing secretarial duties, and keeping the nursery for many years. Freda primarily worked as a secretary for the Army Corps of Engineers and volunteered her time as a tax preparer. In her retirement, she continued to serve others by caring for aging friends and loved ones. She lived a quiet life and found meaning in the relationships she nurtured with her children, grandchildren, siblings, and friends.

Freda was greeted in Heaven by her husband and parents. She is missed by her four children and their families; Laura (Harold) Haggenmaker, Kelton (Katherine) Pankey, Dona (Joel) Norwood, Fred (Teresa) Pankey, as well as eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Sister, Donna (Larry) Arnold; Brothers, Leonard (Scheree) Pearce, Bruce (Karon) Pearce and Carson (Hope) Pearce.

Ma is most remembered for her humble spirit. She truly embodies the Proverbs 31: 29-31: Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

Services will be 11am Thursday at Spry Funeral Home Chapel in Athens with Fred Pankey officiating, burial in Bethel Cemetery. Visitation is 6pm until 8pm Wednesday at Spry Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Nick Haggenmaker, Roy Pankey, Hunter Pankey, Zeb Pankey, Robert Cowher and Guillermo Reyes. Memorials may be made to your favorite charties.

Ma was my mother in law for 13 years. She was a wonderful grandmother to my children. Prayers for the family during this difficult time.

My deepest sympathies are with you and yours. My Mema & Papa Carol & Bob Pankey thought so much of Mrs Freda. She was a Beautiful Sweet Soul. My thoughts are with You All.
