Ruby Hazel Grubbs of Athens, AL went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 15, 2024, at the age of 96.
Visitation will be from 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM on Monday, September 23, 2024, immediately followed by a funeral service officiated by the Rev. Garry Ragsdale at Spry Funeral Home Athens, AL. She will be laid to rest next to her husband at Roselawn Cemetery in Athens, AL following the funeral service.
Hazel is survived by her son, Gerald Grubbs (Donna) St. Louis, MO, grandchildren, Melissa Grubbs, Chicago, IL, Jeffrey Grubbs (Meghan) great grandson, Elvin, Grubbs Brooklyn, NY, and sister Alma Batts, Athens, AL. Hazel also left behind several nieces and nephews, and her wide circle of friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Wayne Grubbs, brothers, George Batts, Marvin Batts, Ed Batts, Rolly Batts, and sisters Katie Jewell, and Sarah Peace.
Hazel was born November 12, 1927, to Eunice and Cleve Batts where she grew up in Ripley, AL on the family farm. After marrying the love of her life, Wayne E. Grubbs, she became a dedicated homemaker and a caring loving mom to her son.
Putting others first came naturally to Hazel, especially while serving as a pastor's wife for thirty years. Rev Grubbs pastored several churches in Al with Hazel always by his side. Daily she served as a prayer warrior, teacher, counselor, and confidant for anyone who called upon her. It was well known that if you needed a good meal you could stop by her home, and she would "fix" you a plate complete with dessert, iced tea, and conversation that would ensure you felt better when you left than when you arrived at her home. She excelled with food preparation and entertaining especially for all the holidays. She enjoyed keeping her home comfortable, nicely decorated and invitational to all. Hazel received many requests to feed a crowd because her food was second to none. Her cornbread dressing, homemade biscuits, and chocolate pies couldn't be replicated but lots of her family have tried. Hazel always enjoyed fun times especially with her family and the youth groups of her church. As busy as she was, Hazel never failed to support her son's extra curricular activities while he was still living at home. She especially enjoyed cheering on the basketball and football teams at Oxford High School while living in Oxford, AL. The Crimson Tide has lost a dedicated fan. Although she couldn't attend the games, Hazel faithfully watched televised games. If watching wasn't possible, she listened to the games on the radio. She usually offered up some amusing commentary that included suggestions for the coaching staff and players.
After retirement from the ministry and moving home to Athens, Hazel was a member of First Baptist Church, and Poplar Creek Church. Hazel loved children and they loved her. Even after retirement, Hazel continued serving others by working in the church daycare program. Some of those children, even after time had gone by, would visit Hazel at her home bringing special treasures to express their love for her. Hazel wants us to never forget how much she loved the Lord and her family. Her family were her pride and joy. She ended each day with Bible study, a phone call or two to those closest to her, and prayer for her family. Hazel lived her life well, leaving a legacy of love, service, and friendship.
She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

To the Grubbs family We are sorry for your loss. Although we never met Hazel, the obituary was very informative about her long life and all the things that she enjoyed doing to bring happiness to others. We have made a donation from the family of Larry and Mary Ellyn Boledovich.
