Douglas Wayne Baucom, a proud Vietnam War veteran, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2025, at the age of 84, surrounded by loved ones.

There will be a 2PM Graveside Friday at Roselawn Cemetery with Bro. Cody Wallace, Bro. Daniel Jewell and Pastor James Swindle officiating.

No Visitation is planned. Spry Funeral Home in Athens is directing.

Pallbearers will be Dwight Calder, Randy Dotson, TC Hart, Paul King, Jon McGuire, and Jerry Smith. Honorary Pallbearers: Marty Baucom, and Calvin Griffin.

Mr. Baucom was born on January 13, 1941, in Athens, AL, he dedicated his life to service, family, and friendship. Wayne served his country with honor and was awarded a Purple Heart. Beyond his military career, Wayne was a devoted father and grandfather.

He is survived by his loving son, James Douglas & “Jimmy”, daughter-in-law, Vicki, and his cherished grandson, James Dylan, who brought him endless joy. He is also survived by Ashley Shinkunas. She, along with her husband, Matt, and their two children, Grayson and Shivney, were a part of his extended family.

Wayne was preceded in death by his father, John Baucom; mother, Estelle; and two brothers, Charles and James Baucom.

One of the greatest and most enduring friendships of his life was with his ex-wife, Wanda. Though their marriage ended, their bond remained strong, and together with her devoted husband, Ray, they ensured Wayne was cared for and supported in his later years. Their kindness and unwavering loyalty were testaments to the relationships Wayne built throughout his life.

He was a longtime employee of Hometown Grocery, where he was known for his strong work ethic, friendly nature, and dedication to his community. In his free time, he enjoyed cutting the yard, watching NASCAR, and helping his son with farming—activities that brought him both peace and purpose. Wayne will be remembered for his sharp wit, stubborn independence, and deep sense of loyalty to those he loved. He was a man of few words but immense presence, and his impact on those around him will not be forgotten.
