Ruth Evelyn (Davenport) Claxton, of Hobart, Indiana passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 25, 2022 at the age of 89, at Rittenhouse Village in Portage, Indiana. Ruth was born in Limestone County, Alabama to Lawrence Edward Davenport and Sarah Zonnie (Adcock) Davenport on October 9,1933. She graduated from Clements High School and attended Athens College, before marrying Robert Daris Claxton in 1952. They spent 57 loving years together until his passing in 2009. She was a faithful member of Hobart Church of Christ for over 60 years. Ruth never met a stranger and she never forgot an acquaintance. Her radiant smile and servant’s heart were evident to all who knew her.  She liked to volunteer her time working the voting polls. She dedicated her life to taking care of her family and will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.

Ruth is survived by her two sons, Victor (Nina) Claxton of Athens, AL, and Lance (Patti) Claxton of Hobart; daughter, Lanica (Patrick) Whaling of Mukwonago; WI; four grandchildren, Jonna Claxton, John Claxton, Laura (Wes) Oliver and Shauna Whaling; three great grandchildren, Raley and  Corban Oliver, Annalise Claxton; three sisters, Edna Ryan, Judy (Richard) Foster, Tamara (Larry) Teeples all of Athens, Alabama; sister-in-laws, Charlene Davenport and Doris Claxton of Athens, Alabama, Linda Cleek of Indiana; brother-in-law, Windell Claxton of Tennessee; and many other loving family members and friends.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Robert D. Claxton; her parents, Lawrence, and Zonnie Davenport; sister, Grace Pepper; brother, Leroy Davenport.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to her friend and caregiver, Angelic Pezan and the staff members at Rittenhouse Village and Dunes Hospice for the care they provided.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 1, 2022 from 3:00 pm - 7:00 pm at Rees Funeral Home, 600 W. Old Ridge Road, Hobart, IN 219-942-2109.  A visitation will follow at Spry Funeral Home, 804 Highway 72, Athens, Alabama on Friday, November 4, 2022 from 10:00 am -1:00 pm followed by the funeral service led by Eddie Littrell at 1:00 pm. Burial will follow at Roselawn Cemetery in Athens, Alabama. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.reesfuneralhomes.com.

I’m so sorry we lost Diane. She was so good to our family. She cared for our Dad as well as 2 brothers when they were sick and was a good friend to them all. I’m thankful for having known her.
