Mary Patricia White Downs, 79, of the Pleasant Point
Community in Limestone County, Alabama, passed away Wednesday, May 1st,
2024 at the Limestone Health Facility after over a yearlong battle with
Glioblastoma.
Services will be Sunday, May 5th at 2pm at Spry
Funeral Home Chapel of Athens, AL with Paul Mason and Jerry Smith
officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant
Point Cemetery. The family will receive
visitors from 11am until 1:45pm on Sunday, May 5th at Spry Funeral Home.
Mary was born at the Dr. J.O. Belue Hospital in Athens,
Alabama to Addie Elizabeth Baker White Smith and William James White, and was a
lifelong resident of Western Limestone County.
She was a 1962 graduate of West Limestone High School. She attended Athens State College and worked
at First National Bank of Athens before becoming a full-time wife, mother, and
farmer.
She married her surviving husband Stanley (Doc) Downs in
June 1967. Together, they spent most of their
careers in agriculture. First, they owned
and operated a dairy farm from 1976-1990 in the Oneal Community. Later, from 1990-2014, they owned and
operated a poultry farm in the Pleasant Point Community. They were life-long supporters of student
programs at Clements, West Limestone, and Cornersville High Schools. She was a volunteer church secretary for many
years at Shanghai Baptist Church, where she attended for over 70 years. They were active members of Salem Springs
Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
siblings: David White, Lorie White,
Samuel Dwayne White, Barbara Smith Lott, Alvin Smith, and Hollice Smith.
In addition to her husband, of over 56 years, she is
survived by her family:
Her Children: Stan
Downs; Will & Shannon Downs; and Jason (Chig) Downs
Her Grandchildren & Great Grandchild: Colby & Carolyn Downs; Sydney Downs; Anna
Grace, Holden, and Lovelyn Graves; Dawson Downs, and Caden Downs.
Her Siblings and Surviving Spouses: Jerry & Joyce Smith; Ricky Smith; Tommie
& Shirley Smith; Annelle White; Francis White; Ricky Lott, and Sandy Smith.
She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and
her church family at Salem Springs Baptist Church.
Donations in her honor can be made to Hospice of Limestone
County, The Pleasant Point Cemetery Fund (c/o First National Bank of Athens),
or the student program of your choice.
We would like to extend a special thank you to her amazing
caregivers at Athens-Limestone HomeCare, Hospice of Limestone County, and Limestone
Health Facility. We would also like to
thank her many friends and family members for their love, support, prayers,
food, and visits during her extended illness.
