It
is with great sadness that the family of Kenneth Ray Lewter announces he went
to be with the Lord on February 1, 2023. Kenneth, a life-long resident of
Limestone County, was born December 13, 1936 to J. Lyphus Lewter and Edna
Franklin Lewter. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ann Lewter; son
and daughter-in-law, Kent and Shea Lewter; daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and
Brad Phillips; grandsons, Cole Lewter and Brett Lewter; sister and
brother-in-law, Jayne and Buddy South; niece, Bellamy Looney; and nephew, John
South along with several great nieces and nephew. Kenneth was preceded in
death by his parents and nephew, Max South.
After
graduating from Ardmore High School, Kenneth went on to play basketball at
Martin Methodist College. It was there he met Ann who lived in Pulaski.
A short while later, Kenneth transferred to Athens College where he also
played basketball. In 1959, he began coaching at Tanner High
School. Kenneth received his master’s degree and was hired as principal
at Owens Junior High School in 1969. He was later elected Limestone
County Superintendent of Education and served in this capacity from 1976-1984.
Kenneth finished his educational career at Madison County Schools as Assistant
Superintendent before retiring in 1988. He remained active after
retirement by serving on the Athens City Council, Limestone County Sports Hall
of Fame Board of Directors and as a member of First Baptist Church of Athens.
Visitation
will be held at First Baptist Church of Athens on February 5, 2023 from
1:00-3:00 p.m. with service immediately following at same location.
Graveside burial follows at Roselawn Cemetery.
Pall
bearers will be Kent Lewter, Brad Phillips, Cole Lewter, Brett Lewter, John
South and Deon Hargrove.
