J. Garland McKee was born on April 29, 1930 in Greenville, Mississippi.  He died on June 21, 2020 at Hospice of West Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Dee Lee McKee.

He is survived by his wife, June McKee; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Gil and Sharon McKee of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; grandson Jason McKee (Torrie) of Northport, Alabama; granddaughter Holly Shipley (Cameron) of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; great grandchildren, Harper Shipley, Wyatt McKee, Lawson Shipley, and Mallie Gray McKee; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jerry and Wilma Richardson of Pearland, Texas; niece Melissa Richardson of New York, New York.

Garland was a graduate of Greenville High School, the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi, and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.  He served God faithfully for 33 years as a pastor in Texas and Louisiana, 3 years as Director of Evangelism for the Union Baptist Association in Houston, Texas, and 5 years as Director of Evangelism for the Mississippi Baptist State Convention in Jackson, Mississippi.

Garland was a faithful and loving husband to June for 69 years.  He was a godly father and grandfather to his son and grandchildren.  He loved God and all people.  His love for people was accented by his winsome personality, wholesome humor, and kind verbal witness for Jesus Christ.  His greatest joy in life was knowing Jesus and making His love and sacrifice on the cross for our sins known to everyone with whom he came in contact.

Garland’s earthly life and arrival into the eternal presence of Jesus is being celebrated by family and friends during a memorial service on June 24, 2020 at First Baptist Church Tuscaloosa.  We will miss our husband, father, grandfather, and friend greatly but, in Christ, we will soon be reunited in glory!

Until then, may our ambition be that with all boldness, Christ will even now, as always, be exalted in (us), whether by life or by death.” Philippians 1:20 (NASB)

My heart goes out to June, Gil, and all the family. Bro McKee led me to Christ and baptized me and my 2 children 3/22/1981. He was my spiritual father and dear to my heart. I loved him like my own daddy. God bless you June, Gil and all the family.

Garland came to Illinois and officiated the funeral of Harley M. McCrite his uncle and my grandfather. That was the only time I heard him preach but he gave a powerful message that day.

Very sorry to hear of his passing. I never had the chance to meet him, but he brought many smiles to my family as we listened to his comedy on family vacations. I pray for peace for his family.
