SFC Worney (Pops) Sampson Stewart (U.S. Army Retired) of Athens, Alabama passed away at age 83 on 15 July 2023 surrounded by family. He is survived by Gracie Nell Stewart (wife), sons Ronney (Barbara) Stewart of Albertville, Billy Joe Stewart of Huntsville, Frank Stewart of Athens, and Raymond Stewart of Hunstville, Son-in-Law David Warren of Weaver, sisters Shelia Adams of Athens and Linda Cobb of Athens, brother Kenneth Stewart of Athens, longtime friend Tommy Morris of Athens, numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Worney was preceded in death by his father Woodrow and mother Frances B. Stewart, daughter Donna Lynn Warren, brothers Otie Stewart and Wilson Stewart. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed cooking and fishing in his spare time.
Worney retired from the US Army after serving numerous tours of duty in Korea and Fort Sill, Oklahoma as a Pershing Missile Operations Sergeant. While serving as Operations Sergeant, he received the Good Conduct Medal (w/ 3rd Oak Leaf Cluster), numerous Certificates of Achievements, and Letters of Recommendation. Worney Stewart will be buried with Military Honors at the Bottoms Cemetery in Athens.

Funeral services are Friday 21 July at Spry Funeral Home. Visitation is 12:00 pm – 1:30 P.M. with a graveside service at 2:00 P.M. at Bottoms Cemetery. Spry Funeral Home in Athens, AL is handling arrangements.
