Phyllis Sand Griffin, 69 of Athens, Alabama, passed away Tuesday May 4, 2021 at UAB Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama.

She was born February 16, 1952 in Ardmore, TN to the late Hammonds Bates and Jessie Faye (Alverson) Bates. She was a high school graduate of Blanche High School in Blanche TN. She worked in hospitality for over 20 years taking care of others.She loved gardening, canning, cooking and sewing. She loved being a Grandmother to her one and only Grandson Jacob ยทWayne Griffin; he was her absolute pride and joy and lived for being his "Maw Maw".

 
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Andrew Layfette Griffin whom formally served in the United States Army and passed away in 1992; Brothers Hammond Larry Bates, Marshall E. Bates and Billy Ray Bates; and sisters Irene Bates Tredway, Georgia B. Mathis, Roxanne "Ann" Rollins Matthews.
 

She is survived by her sons Sammy (Samantha) Griffin, Michael (Jessica) Griffin, Grandson Jacob Griffin; Sisters Reba (Clyde) Frame and Faye (Joe) Hobbs as well as several nieces and nephews, family and friends.

 
Graveside Memorial services will be held on May 22, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. at Copeland Cemetery 27160 Copeland Road Athens AL, 35613. Services will be followed by a Celebration of Life and Luncheon at Copeland Presbyterian Church at 27085 Copeland Road Athens AL, 35613. Spry Funeral Home in Athens assisted the family.
