Bates - Nathan H., 82, (Shorty) of Athens, Alabama, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2022 at home.
He was the husband of Lillie "Doris" Bates. He was born on April 4, 1939 in Athens, AL, a son of the late Chester and Gertrude Bates.Shorty dearly loved and valued his family and all the time he spent with them, Shorty was a Christian who loved the Lord; he and his wife Doris attended and served Rogersville First Baptist Church. A retiree from 3M, Shorty loved golfing with his "older men" group and enjoyed watching Alabama football.
He is preceded in death by his son Jimmy Bates, grandson Jess Bates, baby sister Hazel Bates, and brothers: "Mutt" Bates and "Bud" Bates. Along with his wife Doris, he is survived by his son, Johnny Bates (Pam): step-children, Van Holland (Victoria) and Melody Evans (Donald). Shorty was the loving grandfather of : Jonathan Bates and Logan Bates; Jeremy Evans (Lauren), Heather Gough (David), Jody Evans (Chelsea), Haley Holt (Jesse), Joel Enans (Paige), and Hollie Evans; Tabatha Bates, Tonya Bates, Morgan Bates, and Mallory Bates. He was also the proud great-grandfather of 21 precious children.
Shorty loved and enjoyed his nephew and nieces.
Service will be held on Monday, February 7, 2022 at 1PM at Spry Funeral Home with Brandon Raney and Buford Bates officiating.
Visitation will be from 11AM until service time. Burial will be in Higgins Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be David Gough, Jesse Holt, Jonathan Bates, Logan Bates, Jeremy Evans, Jody Evans and Joel Evans. Honorary Pallbearers will be Sunday School Class of First Baptist Rogersville.Flowers are welcome or donations can be made to any Women's Resource center.
